“COLORADO’S STRANGEST” by Kenneth Jessen

Colorado’s Strangest is a highly illustrated talk about unusual events and people in the state’s history including Packer who dined on his five companions. “Soapy” Smith was probably state’s greatest con artist with his bar of soap scam. Punes, a burro, worked the mines in the Fairplay area and was buried on the main street as a tribute to these hardworking animals. A cold winter led to the construction of a large ice palace near Leadville. These stories, including hair covered trout, are all a fun part of this presentation.

“The Klan in Colorado in the 1920’s” by Meg Dunn

Many have never heard, or know very little, about the rising tide of the KKK in America during the 1920s, especially right here in our own state of Colorado. Meg Dunn will give an overview of how the Ku Klux Klan was revived in 1915, invited to Colorado, and spread to every region of the state, including Northern Colorado. Coloradoans took what had previously been a Southern institution, and we made it our own, normalizing hatred in a way that made it not only acceptable, but highly regarded by many. While heartbreaking, it is part of our local history that we should all know and understand.
